By the Numbers: Paint sales defy the downturn, says Home Improvement Research Institute

$12.5 billion

Amount of paint that Americans will be buy in 2010, according to a report
commissioned by the Home Improvement Research Institute and covered in
Home Channel News. The figure represents a 12.9 percent gain from 2008, when
sales of paints and preservatives totaled $11 billion. Sales in 2009 sales are pegged to rise by 2.9 percent, says HIRI. Based on these numbers, paint is showing signs of bucking the recession trend.

By the Numbers: "Cogen" plants do double duty to save energy

6.2 megawatts

Amount of electricity to be produced by a natural-gas generator, enough to provide up to half the power for the 57-story New York City skyscraper where its located. The steam the generator will be produced won't go to wasteit will be used to heat and cool the building, according to this recent story in The New York Times. This generator, known as a cogeneration plant, or cogen, can reduce energy costs.

An Obama Dog is Coming Home Soon!

By the Numbers: U.S. housing supply rises in latest NAR numbers

Total U.S housing inventory at the end of January, according to a new press release from the National Association of Realtorsat the current sales rate, it would take nearly 10 months for all existing homes on he market to sell. The NAR also reported yesterday that sales of existing single-family homes, town houses, condos, and co-ops fell to a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.49 million units, an unexpected 5.3 percent drop from December 2008 and an 8.6 percent decline from year earlier. A record 7.08 million existing homes were sold in 2005.
