Home Star gets national attention, but Senate stays mum

National Public Radios Weekend Edition Saturday had a nice segment on Home Star, the multibillion legislation that, if voted into law, would give rebates to homeowners who make their residences more energy efficient. Christopher Joyce, a correspondent on NPRs science desk, followed an energy retrofit company as it performed an energy audit on a home in suburban Washington, D.C. Air leaks, inadequate insulation, and poorly-maintained heating equipment were among the spotted inefficiencies. We do a better job servicing our car than our house, admitted a somewhat sheepish homeowner.
 
The Senate might be feeling sheepish, too, for failing to pass Home Star, despite the fact that it zipped through the House last May and enjoys strong bi-partisan support. Nothing can happen now until November 17, when Congress returns to Washington for a lame-duck session. We are hopeful that Home Star can advance at that point, but it's really impossible to know now what will happen then, wrote Bill Wicker, spokesperson for the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources, in an email.

Cash for appliances: In D.C.—spare change we can believe in

Water_heater2 The final cash for appliance program in the U.S. launched today in the District of Columbia with $568,000 to be given away on rebates for energy-efficient appliances and heating and cooling equipment. Supported by funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the rebate program could extend until 2012, although many states have already exhausted their funds.

Pre-Halloween sales at Black Friday prices

Sales We're five weeks away from Black Friday and already major retailers are dropping prices to entice early shoppers into the stores and onto their websites. Amazon has been discounting prices for months and, as a result, its third-quarter sales surged 39 percent. We combed the websites and sale circulars of some major appliance and equipment retailers and found prices cut on some top performers. Some stores are throwing in free delivery and haulaway deals to sweeten the deal.

Recall: 122,000 Frigidaire and Electrolux cooktops and ranges

11016b(2) After getting reports of 70 smoothtop ranges and cooktops that had turned on unexpectedly or failed to turn off, Electrolux is recalling 122,000 cooking appliances sold under the Electrolux and Frigidaire brands. There have been three reported fires that resulted in property damage and three minor burn injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
