Speaking this morning from Georgetown University, President Obama argued his case yet again for major energy reform. The speech comes as rising fuel costs, together with continued turmoil in the Middle East, are putting the squeeze on American consumers. Indeed, the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index for March fell more than expected to 63.4 from a revised 72.0 in February.

When we tested steam irons, the Rowenta Pro Master DW8080 was one of our recommended models. It had an excellent steaming rate, was very good at smoothing out various fabrics and was easy to use. But little did we know that the Rowenta was also the preferred iron of royalty—or at least of a butler who has worked for the British royal family as well as American aristocrats.

With cars whizzing by on a nearby highway, the Cornell Cooperative Extension marked the spot where it began 100 years ago when a farmer set out on a horse and buggy to help local growers. The farmer, John Barron, was recently honored with a stone marker next to a bank on a former field in Binghamton, NY. And while the landscape has changed dramatically, the mission of the extension program, now in every state, has not.

An amended settlement for people who say they bought tainted drywall from Lowe’s, has won preliminary approval in a Georgia state court, according to ProPublica. “Lowe’s, the nation’s No. 2 home improvement chain, is offering as much as $100,000 in cash to customers who can prove they bought drywall from the retailer and also prove that it caused at least $4,500 in damages,” the investigative website reported.

Today’s muffin top is yesterday’s love handles, according to the latest online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. Known as the “protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers,” the muffin top plays off the crunchy top section of that breakfast food. And someone who sports a muffin top may have feasted on too many of the other delicious new words that appear in the OED.

Masco Corporation announced a deal this week with the City of Meadows Place, Texas, under which Masco-owned Behr paint will become the town’s official paint. As part of the agreement, Behr will supply enough exterior paint for 10 homes, labor for three of those homes, and expert advice for local contractors. Selected homeowners will be given the option of Behr Premium Plus Ultra or Behr Premium Plus exterior paints.
