Video: Tax refunds on prepaid cards

The IRS is reaching out to taxpayers, offering them the opportunity to get their refund on a prepaid debit card. The agency has sent out letters to thousands of low-to moderate income filers inviting them to sign up for this pilot program. The goal is to prevent taxpayers who dont have a traditional bank account from using pricey alternatives, such as refund anticipation loans.

Many people were very excited to hear Apple’s latest announcement about the next iPad. I wasn’t surprised to hear that the newer model would be available in both black and white. After all, Apple usually changes its iPod designs for every new generation — adding color, altering the shape.

Spring Fever package at Hyatt Chesapeake Bay

The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort in Cambridge is offering a Spring Fever package with rates starting at $159 per night, Sunday-Thursday, based on double occupancy. The deal is available for stays April 1- June 10 and includes overnight stay and a s’mores kit. Tax and a $20 resort fee are extra.

IRS: There’s $27.7 million waiting for Marylanders to claim

The IRS says it has more than $27.7 million in unclaimed refunds from 2007 for more than 25,000 Marylanders. About half of the refunds are worth at least $645, the IRS figures.

Shopping for eyeglasses and contact lenses: Consumer Website of the Week

I’ll admit it: I have terrible vision. At the doctor’s office, even the largest letter on the eye chart is blurry for me. As a result, I spend very little time without corrective lenses in place, whether they be contact lenses or glasses.

Passengers view space shuttle launch from plane

Passengers aboard a flight from Orlando to Richmond were treated to a sky show last week when space shuttle Discovery lifted off from Cape Canaveral, just east of the central Florida airport. Apparently the flight was delayed, so I guess this was their reward. I’ve certainly never seen anything this cool from my window seat. On the other hand, I prefer a boring, uneventful flight.

Oil rises and so does cost of airline ticket

I don’t normally write about gas prices, but I’m getting just a tad nervous. Last night on my way home, the gas station closest to my neighborhood showed $3.43 a gallon for regular. That’s why I regularly avoid it and go to Costco, even though I have to drive 20 miles to get there. (Not sure that makes sense or cents.)
